Three vital requirements for the grass roots
WATER
OXYGEN
FOOD
TOPICALLY - UNTIL THE LAST FEW DAYS IN THE NORTHERN PART OF THE UK.
This is a classic case of drought stress - obviously the lawn has been starved of sufficient water and is probably compacted so that when it is watered or it rains lightly the water will probably not permeate to the roots.
It is very important to get water permeated to send the roots deep . If you just lightly water the surface in times of drought the roots will turn towards the surface searching for the water. So if you are watering - water it thoroughly do not use feed unless there is sufficient water to carry the food to the roots.
There may well be something called DRY PATCH in certain areas so you need to purchase a wetting agent from any garden centre or large DIY store this will help the water to permeate through the surface.
When this has happened you need to apply your Lawn Magic.
HOW CAN I MINIMISE THE CHANCE OF THIS HAPPENING
Regularly spike the lawn from early in the season
You can hire a spiker from the Tool hire shop if you have a large lawn or you can spike using a garden fork just spike to at least 4 inches deep.
Keep the Lawn well watered when hot weather is forecast.
The lawn should be spiked at least twice in a season - At the beginning and at the end of the season.
